10 Sep Highlights from the event “Latest Updates on the German Sports Betting Application” by Chevron Group & Redeker Sellner Dahs
Last week the MRGC collaborated in an event hosted by Chevron Consultants together with the German law firm Redeker Sellner Dahs. Around 50 attendees made up of a majority of in-house legal counsels at gambling operators based, or with a presence in Malta, legal associates from the Maltese law firms who deal with Gambling law and consultants. The topic of discussion was the new German sports-betting licensing procedure.
The organisers had good feedback on the content presented, showing the keen interest in the German market from Malta, despite the language and jurisdictional barriers felt. One of the most interesting posts was the fact that the competent authority has communicated that, as from January 2020, letters will be sent to the 160 operators on the German market who have been flagged as not having started the application.
Another important topic was the critical restrictions such as the fact that only sports-betting will be licensable, the fact of not sufficient information on permitted betting types, the limit of Euro 1,000 on stakes per player per month, the AML concept, Responsible Gaming Concept and the ISMS.
Chevron-Consultants’ Managing Director, Mr. Jochen Biewer, explained that while the applications are already available for submission now, however, it is best to wait until December 2019 before submitting. This due to the fact that, currently, the industry is waiting for guidelines from the authority in charge or regulator and to have updated due diligence by the time that we start to review.
